Creating Carnival in The Gambia

Creating Carnival in The Gambia

Con Brio Director Tom Northey was very grateful to carnival arts organisation Global Grooves for the chance to visit The Gambia in February 2018 as part of a group of 39 carnival artists, percussionists and dancers.   The group participated in Kartong Cultural Festival, a unique event celebrating West African cultural traditions.  The festival is at a key point of change following challenges in recent years and the involvement of an international visiting delegation gave a much needed boost.

As well as participating in workshops, skills exchanges and cultural visits, the Global Grooves team created a new piece of carnival with the local community, working alongside schools, young people and other Gambian artists.  The final piece was a highlight of the festival, incorporating an illuminated procession down the main street of this lively West African town.

Global Grooves hopes to build on these links, working with the festival committee and other local partners to explore the potential of international links and residencies to boost the local economy and generate vital cultural tourism.  Con Brio hopes to be part of these developments.
