Playground of wonders…
On a cold, bright day in February two Greater Manchester arts organisations took part in a study trip to Blackpool, organised by Con Brio. The team met with local cultural leaders from the council, Grand Theatre, Grundy Art Gallery, and LeftCoast, the Creative People and Places delivery organisation.
In between a trip around the venues and down the famous seafront promenade we discussed arts-led regeneration, where to look for cultural leadership, developing a shared vision, and how to grow arts programmes which genuinely engage and resonate with local people.
Despite the considerable social challenges there is an energy and dynamism in Blackpool’s arts and cultural sector which is missing in many other northern towns. We all came away with a determination to keep pushing, to build new relationships, to make the case for the arts, and simply to crack on with the work ourselves.
